Prebiotic Skin Care
Many of us know that friendly bacteria are important to the digestive process. What you may not realize is just how important they are, and that they do much more than just help us digest.
There are approximately 9 times more bacteria in your body than human cells. Uh huh. You're more bacteria than you are "body" in that sense. And the digestive bacteria are like an entire extra organ. Possibly multiple extra organs. Without them, you're a goner.
The balance of bacteria is also crucial. When certain bacteria get out of control, you know we get sick, and that's why we have antibiotics. The problem with antibiotics is that they kill ALL bacteria, including the ones you need. So after antibiotics, it's important to replenish with probiotics and/or prebiotics.
The power of prebiotics is that they don't just introduce a few select strains of new bacteria as probiotics do. They're a food source for all of your friendly bacteria. As the good guys go on an eating rampage, they multiply and overwhelm the unfriendly bacteria to keep them in check. While I can't make claims about disease (and don't really care for disease diagnosis), you can see why this would theoretically prevent a lot of bacterial problems.
Like the digestive system, the skin requires the right balance of bacteria. Now remember, the skin doesn't just make you look good, but it's also your largest organ, regulating temperature, helping to eliminate toxins from the body, and shielding you from outside bacteria and viruses. The skin itself has more than 1000 types of bacteria living on it, so now you can imagine how important it is to keep them well. And this is where prebiotic skin care comes in.
Sadly, it looks like the prebiotic skin care line I knew is no longer available BUT there is a reasonable alternative. Rather than a prebiotic solution, another company has a probiotic skin care formula. That means they're not feeding healthy bacteria, but actually providing healthy bacteria for the skin. I believe this means the products need to be refrigerated. Very well reviewed on Amazon:
