So tomorrow night, September 27, we have a full lunar eclipse ("blood moon" for its slightly reddish hue) when the moon is in its closest position to Earth (call a Super moon, not to be confused with Superman). Never mind that a blood moon would never be this red, I chose this incredible image to whet your whistle for this consequential event.
Let's get the obvious out of the way first. This would be a terrible blood moon because, with that many clouds, you'd never see it from the ground. But it would be pretty amazing seen above the clouds like this ... and somehow tucked in the clouds themselves.
But I digress: today's post is about the fact that this blood moon is being predicted as yet another harbinger to the end of the world. Some of this comes from several Biblical prophecies about the end times coming with a moon that turns red as blood. What these soothsayers forget is that this prophecy is also supposed to come with the stars falling from the skies.
Since that can't literally happen (or it can and science is wayyy wrong), I've interpreted that to mean this event actually occurred on August 14, 2003 -- the night of the blackout across several states and part of Canada when ours skies -- normally dotted with lights everywhere -- went dark. And the moon? It was just past full, and happened to rise red that night at least in Detroit. Now you know.
So in fact the end times were much less pronounced than perhaps we expected. Or they just haven't finished yet. And maybe that is what all the hubbub is about in regards to tomorrow night's moon.
Just one problem, and I've pointed to this before: Darwood & Smitty takes place in 2045, so we already know all sorts of stuff that happens in the future. Meaning that, at least on one timeline, the world doesn't end any time soon. And neither does corruption. Conclusion: we don't have some spiritual figure intervening, kicking the butts of bad guys, and assuming the rest of us will then play nicely together. I'm not saying that can't happen -- just that it doesn't happen by 2045.
On the other hand, I'd like to believe that this Super Blood Moon does have meaning. More than just a pretty moon. And maybe we have to give it that meaning.
Picture for a moment that you're the wisest being in creation. (I know people who are convinced of this anyway.) Would you really swoop in and save people who were doing nothing to save themselves? Would that set any kind of precedent for the rest of eternity with those people? Or would you wait for them to at least try "being the change they want to see in the world"?
From my non-eternal experience, the first group would spend the rest of eternity always waiting for someone else to do things for them. If I'm some kind of savior, I'm waiting for the people to stand up against evil en masse, even if they don't have the power to overthrow that evil. If they need a savior for that, okay ... I'm on my way. But not until they were willing to take the fall themselves. Not until they were willing to do the work.
From my sense of things, a lot of that is underway. I see a lot of good changes in the world, and I love thinking that we're growing and choosing more consciously to do the right thing. But we still make many decisions based on what's best for us individually or for our immediate family. Maybe we need to start demanding from ourselves that we choose what's good for everyone, and maybe that trickles up to our leaders.
Because it's clear that those decisions aren't trickling down.
Of course perspective is a funny thing, and seems to place people literally into different worlds or realities. You talk with some people and they've convinced that more bad is happening in the world than good. In my eyes, more good is happening. People have glowy ideas about what the past was like, but if you really take a look, you'll see a lot of progress that's been made. It's just that, with progress comes more power; and with more power, the bad things can seem really bad.
So on that note, I ask you: do you see more good happening in the world than bad? Or the other way around? And to try keeping things positive, what's the most powerful GOOD thing you see happening today?
