Well, we've waited for years for the world to come to an end as the Mayans told us it would. Only, they probably didn't. Or else they were wrong. Or else we've shifted dimensions and just didn't notice it.
Whatever the case, I can say that I knew we'd still be conscious because the events described in Darwood & Smitty barely begin around 2015 (as the world was pulling out of the deep economic recession), start getting interesting in 2020 (when government goes global), and the story itself takes place in 2045. Since it's a literal tale (told directly to me by the characters), I was pretty sure we'd survive 2012.
